ORLANDO, Fla. — While Florida will stay warm over the weekend, a winter storm just to the north is still on the minds of many, especially those traveling.
Friday proved to bring a wave of emotions to travelers at the Orlando International Airport.
What You Need To Know
A winter storm is expected to impact millions of people traveling across the U.S.
MCO saw about 200 delays and about half a dozen cancellations Friday
Most travelers share that they didn’t experience any travel delays, while others booked earlier flights or extended their stay in Florida
FlightAware indicates that dozens of cancellations are expected throughout the weekend
The flight display board was filled with red and yellow on the board which indicated about 200 delays and eight cancellations.
And because Central Florida is a hotbed for vacationers, MCO welcomes travelers from all over.
Peter McCann and his wife traveled to Florida from Connecticut to take part in some Disney activities.
“We came down for the Disney Marathon. We participated in that and stayed a week after that and stayed this past week as well,” McCann shared.
As they prepared to go home, they ran into some challenges they feel are due to the winter storm.
“We were scheduled to go back home tomorrow, and that was canceled, so we rebooked on the airline, and they canceled that too,” McCann said. “When we got here, we didn’t know that it was canceled until we got here.”
The sign at the Avelo Airlines ticketing line is the only notice McCann said he received about the cancellation and when he called customer service, he was told that he was the 450th person in the queue, which would take more than 530 minutes to speak to a representative.
So, that may mean an extended stay for the McCanns.
“It’s going to cost us some money, I think. I mean more rooms and more eats,” he said.
But not everyone is facing the same fate.
Reeven Elfman and Lisa Drew are from Rhode Island and came to Orlando for their annual Disney Vacation Club getaway.
And while they enjoyed themselves, they felt it was wise to cut their trip short and fly home two days early.
“We figured if we didn’t get out today then we could get stuck for a while, and I was willing to get stuck for a while but we really thought we should get home,” the couple said.
They also shared advice with travelers who may be impacted in the coming days.
“I’d say go with the flow. It’s okay, be patient, it’s okay,” Lisa Drew exclaimed. “It’s a gift that we get to go on vacation and be here.”
The McCanns decided to take Drew’s advice to heart as they decided to enjoy their lengthened stay.
“We’re forced to stay in the Sunshine State for another two to three days, so I suppose we can make it,” McCann said.
The delays are expected to be felt throughout the weekend as there are already 60 or more cancellations for both Saturday and Sunday, according to FlightAware.
