One man was killed and another critically wounded in a shooting in St. Petersburg on Friday evening that police said appears to be a case of self-defense during a robbery attempt.

The shooting occurred just after 6:30 p.m. in the 900 block of 22nd Lane South.

St. Petersburg police said two armed men tried to rob two other men, who were in a parked vehicle. The men in the vehicle also were armed, and shots were fired.

One of the robbers, whom police identified as Syltico Morand, 29, was shot and died at the scene. The second robber, whom police did not publicly identify, was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, police said.

“At this time, all the evidence points to a self-defense shooting, but there is additional investigative follow-up underway,” police said in a news release. “As a result, the men who were detained and interviewed have not been charged for now.”

No other details were immediately released.
