CAIRO, Ga. (WCTV) – Three South Georgia dancers received scholarships this weekend in honor of the late country singer and Grady County native Daryle Singletary.
The “Small Town, Big Dreams” scholarship was created by Daryle’s brother, Kevin Singletary, and his wife, Melinda. “Being able to give this scholarship in my brother’s honor, it means the world to us,” Singletary said.
The goal is to encourage students to dream big, no matter how small their hometown may be.
“Seeing how when Daryle left here after he graduated, he had to hustle. He had to have resilience to do that, but it took community support to get him over that threshold,” Singletary said.
“So, I’m hoping this scholarship will do the same.”

Students at the Southern Dance Collective had to write an essay as part of their application.
The first-place winner was Talisa Dean, and she received a $1,000 dance scholarship.
The second and third place winners were Emmary Norton and Madison Wilson, receiving $750 and $500, respectively. The judges were from California and Tennessee, with experience in performing arts.
“The older I get, the more emotional I get, and to see them really have that emotion, it really touched my heart,” Singletary said.
He said they plan to continue the scholarship in future years, with hopes that it can grow to also help band and theatre students at Cairo High School.
