Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer on Monday said the city can’t do anything about a possible U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility proposed within city limits. It comes after residents raised concerns about the facility, Dyer said. ICE agents have had an increased presence in Central Florida as the Trump administration continues its controversial mass deportation plan. There’s been speculation about a facility coming to Orlando. “Although we have not been informed by the federal government about any potential plans, we have sought legal advice to understand if the city has any options to regulate or prevent a facility like this,” the mayor said in a news release. Dyer said it was because of a Supremacy Clause within the U.S. Constitution.”The city is unable to take action to limit or regulate any activity by the federal government,” he said. Dyer went on to say: “We remain committed to being a city that treats every person with dignity and respect. Immigrants are a valued part of our community and have helped to shape a stronger, more vibrant Orlando. We encourage residents who are concerned about ICE actions to contact their representatives in Congress as Congress holds the power to oversee, fund and reform these activities.”Last week, a woman was arrested outside an ICE facility in Orlando after deputies say she blocked a law enforcement vehicle with her body and hit it.

“Although we have not been informed by the federal government about any potential plans, we have sought legal advice to understand if the city has any options to regulate or prevent a facility like this,” the mayor said in a news release.

Dyer said it was because of a Supremacy Clause within the U.S. Constitution.

“The city is unable to take action to limit or regulate any activity by the federal government,” he said.

Dyer went on to say:

“We remain committed to being a city that treats every person with dignity and respect. Immigrants are a valued part of our community and have helped to shape a stronger, more vibrant Orlando.
