Nick Moss Band

SAFETY HARBOR — Award-winning traditional electric Chicago blues group the Nick Moss Band featuring Dennis Gruenling will perform on Saturday, Feb. 7, 7:30 p.m., at the Safety Harbor Art & Music Center, 706 Second St. N., Safety Harbor.

Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Visit www.safetyharborartandmusiccenter.com.

The Nick Moss Band — 2024 winners of the prestigious Blues Music Award for Band Of The Year — continue to ride high on the success of their 2023 Alligator Records album, “Get Your Back Into It!” Chicago native, guitarist and vocalist Nick Moss and New Jersey native, harmonica player and vocalist Dennis Gruenling — together with Rodrigo Mantovani on bass, Taylor Streiff on keyboards and Pierce Downer on drums — deliver a deeply rooted, timeless blue collar blues album.

According to Moss, “We are a rare breed as far as how authentic we like to keep the music.” That’s not a surprise to longtime fans, as Moss proudly represents the city of Chicago as one of the few bluesmen working today to have learned his craft firsthand directly from many of the genre’s original creators.

Moss first made a name for himself playing bass for bluesman Jimmy “Fast Fingers” Dawkins. Dawkins encouraged Nick to unleash his fire and passion. From there, Moss was chosen by Willie “Big Eyes” Smith to join his Legendary Blues Band, but Smith insisted Moss switch to guitar. Blues icon Jimmy Rogers hired Moss as his touring guitarist, mentoring him on the blues lifestyle along the way. Today, Moss’ blistering fretwork, impassioned, soul-charged vocals and memorable original songs place him in a league of his own.

Gruenling, Moss’ friend of over 20 years, is considered among today’s most innovative and creative blues harmonica players. His high-energy, full-throttle reed work has earned him comparisons to many of the greats, including the late James Cotton. A self-taught player and a natural entertainer with seven solo albums and numerous guest appearances to his credit, Gruenling’s giant, fat-toned harp work, raw-boned singing and untamed energy are a perfect foil for Moss’ inspired guitar playing and straight-from-the-shoulder blues vocals.

Few rap artists have been as instrumental to the game as YFN Lucci. Inking a deal with Think It’s A Game Records in 2014, he wasted no time releasing his debut mixtape, “Wish Me Well.” Following the success of the project, the Summerhill rapper unleashed “Wish Me Well 2” in 2016, quietly reinventing trap music with spurts of introspection packaged into social commentary about his everyday life. That same year, Lucci landed on XXL’s 50 Best Hip-Hop Songs of 2016 and Vibe’s The 60 Best Songs of 2016 list.

At a relentless pace without comparison, he has reeled in RIAA certifications for several songs — including the platinum-certified “Key to the Streets,” featuring Migos & Trouble; the Billboard-charting “Everyday We Lit,” featuring PnB Rock, which peaked at No. 33 on the Hot 100 Chart; and the gold-selling smash “Heartless.”

ST. PETERSBURG — Lettuce will perform on Thursday, Feb. 5, 7 p.m., at Jannus Live, 200 First Ave. N., St. Petersburg.

Lettuce began to form in the summer of 1992 when a group of teenagers attending the music program at Berklee College of Music in Boston discovered they shared an affinity for funk artists such as Herbie Hancock, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Tower of Power. A few years later, the first lineup started playing Boston jazz clubs. In 2002, Lettuce released “Outta Here,” their first album.

The band released their eighth studio album, “Unify,” in 2022. It is also the third consecutive record Lettuce has made at Denver’s Colorado Sound Studios, completing a loose trilogy starting with 2019’s Grammy-nominated “Elevate,” and continuing with 2020’s “Resonate.”

“Dealing with the pandemic, being in separate places, trying to survive without our best friends, without touring, not to mention the political divide in this country — we really needed to unify,” said Lettuce drummer Adam Deitch.

Reunited with Colorado Sound engineer Jesse O’Brien, “Unify” is a collaborative effort, with highlights including the track “Keep That Funk Alive,” inspired by the venerable Parliament-Funkadelic bassist, Bootsy Collins, and featuring Collins on bass and vocals. It was a benchmark moment for the sextet — which includes Deitch (drums), Ryan Zoidis (saxophone), Adam Smirnoff (guitar), Erick Coomes (bass), Nigel Hall (keyboards/vocals), Eric “Benny” Bloom (trumpet) — as they celebrated their 30th anniversary.

“We’re just getting tighter and tighter,” said Coomes. “Really, these are the first records made with the six of us as a team, and it’s the best the band has ever been: live and in the studio; the funkiest and the most fun.”
