PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — Port St. Lucie City leaders are moving forward with plans to build a new public works administration building.
On Monday, the city council approved the site plan at a meeting.
The proposed building will be located at the northeast corner of SW Cameo Blvd. and SW Crosstown Parkway.
A Miami-based development firm conducted a traffic study for the busy area, which is near the turnpike, St. Lucie West K-8 and high school, and several neighborhoods.
The facility will be more than 47,000 square feet, three stories high, and will include parking for hundreds of cars.
Gopher Tortoise burrows found on the site will need to be relocated before construction can begin.
A spokesperson for the city said the project will return to the city council for construction contract approval. Following that construction documents and necessary permits will be obtained.
The city spokesperson tells CBS12 News that the new public works building will be funded by bonds and public building impact fees, with groundbreaking expected by the end of 2026 and construction anticipated to take two years.
