TAMPA, FL — A Tampa bank robber’s mother turned her son into deputies, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Aaron Spencer, 33, entered the Truist Bank on Memorial Highway in Tampa on Thursday just after 1 p.m. and demanded money from the teller, implying he had a gun.
Spencer left with the money on foot and threw out his clothing in a nearby parking lot.
Later that day, a woman called 911 around 4:30 p.m. saying her son had just robbed a bank and that she was on her way to the District III office with Spencer to turn him in.
He was arrested at 5:45 p.m.and turned over the stolen money to detectives.
Spencer was charged with robbery with a firearm while wearing a mask ($750 or more but less than $20,000). He was currently out on bond for a bank robbery in April related to a Tampa Police Department investigation.
“When someone’s own mother feels compelled to turn them in, it speaks volumes about accountability and the trust our community places in doing the right thing,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “Her courage helped end a dangerous situation and reinforces the message that responsibility starts at home.”
