TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCJB) – A North Central Florida state lawmaker is getting support in Tallahassee for his bill to allow workers in Florida to opt out of the state minimum wage.
On Wednesday, Representative Ryan Chamberlin of Belleview answered questions from other members of the House Industries and Professional Activities subcommittee.
He says Florida’s minimum wage of $14 an hour, which will be $15 by September, can be bad for business.
“This is having a huge impact on our young people and those seeking retraining in other more profitable fields of work. Should they choose, this bill will allow an employee to waive the right to minimum wage if he or she was receiving other value in an internship, apprenticeship or on-the-job workforce training,” said Chamberlin.
Democrats said companies would abuse the option to pressure employees.
The committee advanced the bill.
