FORT MYERS, Fla. – Southern Fresh Farms has long been one of Fort Myers’ most recognizable local destinations, known for its fresh produce, farm animals, seasonal festivals and community events.
The family-friendly farm blends agriculture with entertainment, giving visitors a chance to pick up locally grown fruits and vegetables while interacting with rescued animals and enjoying food and drinks on the property.
Last year, the farm was put up for sale, leaving its future uncertain. Now, the next chapter is being written by Bo McMahon, the son of the farm’s founders, who is stepping in to continue his parents’ legacy.
“I wanted to make sure this place was run by someone who would preserve the land,” McMahon said. “So, a group of investors and I decided to buy the farm.”
The group of investors includes people who have deep personal and family ties to Southern Fresh Farms. Together, they spend their days working on improvements and planning what’s next for the property by hand.
Robert McMahon, who has owned and operated the farm with his wife for more than a decade, said seeing his son take over makes him proud.
“My son is taking over and he’s taking it to the next level,” he said. “He and his group have fresh ideas that will elevate this place.”
Several upgrades are planned over the next few months. The farm will introduce a full-time chef and expand its farm-to-table offerings, using produce grown directly on the property.
New crops will be planted so visitors can both eat and take produce home with them.
A new playground for children is also in the works, along with a brewery and an additional bar area. More animals will be added to the farm, continuing its tradition of housing rescued animals and giving guests an interactive experience.
Event programming will also expand, building on popular seasonal festivals and community gatherings the farm already hosts throughout the year and new events.
Despite the changes, McMahon said the heart of Southern Fresh Farms will remain the same, “All the animals here are rescued or have grown up here,” he said. “We grow these vegetables and fruits right here. Agriculture is who we are, and I want to share that with everyone.”
McMahon also hopes to use the farm as an educational space for younger generations, offering opportunities for children to learn about farming, animals and where their food comes from, ” Agriculture is who we are. It’s so important that it stays alive and I’m so glad my son and his group are coming in to keep it alive,” said Robert McMahon.
Renovations and updates will continue throughout the year. Visitors can follow Southern Fresh Farms on social media for the latest information about new features, events and reopening plans.
