An 83-year-old Buffalo Grove man has been arrested in connection with a 2024 fraud investigation involving the theft of millions in public funds, including money from the city of Tallahassee, Florida.
Tallahassee police last Friday (Jan. 23) announced the arrest of Richard N. Golding, an attorney from the Northwest suburb. Golding faces two counts of wire fraud, along with charges of money laundering, grand theft, and attempted grand theft.
Authorities said the investigation uncovered a sophisticated network of “coordinated deceit” that spanned state and international borders. Detectives allege Golding knowingly participated in the receipt of $2.35 million in stolen funds and facilitated an international transfer to a Mexican bank on behalf of an unidentified criminal network.
Police said the city of Tallahassee was one of several victims of the scheme. Investigators were able to recover $1.4 million for the city.
“No crime is faceless,” Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said in a statement. “Someone sought to harm each member of this community by stealing public dollars.”
The investigation involved a “meticulous” review of financial records and coordination with several jurisdictions across the country to trace the movement of the money, officials said.
Golding was held in the Cook County Jail pending extradition to Florida.
