A proposed 2 million-square-foot data center is under review in Indiantown and could bring about 400 jobs to the quickly growing village.

At least partly behind the proposal is Nelson Ferreira, whose name is associated with Ferreira Construction, a nationwide company with offices in Florida.

Data centers are proliferating around the country. They house computers used to process and store computer applications and data and to power online computing including artificial intelligence. A $13.5 billion, 15 million-square-foot data center is being considered in St. Lucie County.

Here are five key takeaways about the Indiantown proposal:

Construction of new homes in the Terra Lago community in Indiantown, Sept. 18, 2025.

∎ The 2.2-million-square-foot data center would be spread among five two-story buildings. The size is equivalent to about 35 football fields.

∎ Owners of the data center would be required to pay for 100% of the electricity it uses, so the cost is kept off the backs of Florida Power & Light Co. customers.

∎ Other protections for nearby residents against disturbances caused by the data center are in Indiantown regulations.

∎ Other regulations may come from Gov. DeSantis’ office, which has proposed an “AI Bill of Rights” to regulate data centers and artificial intelligence.

∎ Indiantown will hold three public hearings on the proposed center. The first will be held by the Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board and could come in March.
