A late‑night house fire in far north Tallahassee left one person dead Friday, according to the Tallahassee Fire Department.

TFD crews were dispatched around 10:30 p.m. to a home on Juanita Way after reports of a residential structure fire. When firefighters arrived, they found the roughly 2,000‑square‑foot, single‑story house fully engulfed in flames.

Because of the intensity of the fire, crews initiated “a defensive attack,” working from the outside to contain the blaze and keep it from spreading to nearby properties, the department said.

TFD confirmed there was a fatality “in connection with this incident” but provided no further information on the victim or what happened. A TFD spokesperson was not immediately available to answer questions.

The agency also said three puppies were found safely outside the home when firefighters arrived.

Units from Stations 1, 2, 9, 10 and 15 responded. The Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Leon County EMS, Leon County Animal Control and the State Fire Marshal also assisted. The American Red Cross was notified to help provide support.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

This is the second fatal fire this month.

On Jan. 14, firefighters were dispatched around 5:20 a.m. to reports of a structure fire. When units arrived to the scene off Blountstown Highway in southwest Tallahassee, they found a cargo trailer fully involved in flames. Crews began suppression efforts immediately and later confirmed one fatality at the scene.

A Florida State University student also died of burns in late December, weeks after a massive fire Nov. 19 at the Social Seminole student apartment complex.
