FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — Fort Pierce is preparing to usher in a new chapter of leadership within its police department as incoming Police Chief David M. Smith is formally sworn in Monday morning.

The ceremony takes place February 2, at 9 a.m. inside the City Commission Chambers at City Hall, located at 100 North U.S. Highway 1.

Because space inside the chambers is limited, the city is offering residents multiple ways to watch the event remotely. A live stream will be available on the City of Fort Pierce website, and the proceedings will also air on FPTV Channel 27 for Comcast subscribers.

Smith steps into the role following unanimous approval of his employment contract by the Fort Pierce City Commission. According to previous reports, commissioners granted Smith a $190,000 annual salary along with a fully equipped police vehicle featuring lights and sirens. His contract also calls for a six-month performance evaluation.

The decision comes after a months-long search following the resignation of former Chief Diane Hobley-Burney.

Commissioners praised the efforts of interim Chief Robert Ridle and expressed confidence that Smith will bring stability and renewed direction to the department.

Smith is expected to meet the city’s residency requirement after securing housing in Fort Pierce. He signed a lease and was slated to officially reside within city limits by February 1, just one day before assuming full command. His family is expected to join him later in the year.
