Near record power usage reported in Tallahassee as cold weather cranks up heat

  • February 3, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – New data shows just how much the heat has been cranked up in the capital city during this rare stretch of frigid weather.

The City of Tallahassee said Monday morning that its electric grid peaked at its seventh-highest usage on record. On Sunday morning, it reached its fifth-highest peak.

In turn, the city’s power plants must generate more power to meet demands.

WCTV got an exclusive look at the largest plant in Tallahassee, the Arvah B. Hopkins generating station, which provides over 400 megawatts of generation for the city.

The facility has 11 generating units, all ensuring Tallahassee residents can turn on the lights and keep their homes warm.

Eric Walters, the assistant general manager, says they work around the clock to service their over 125,000 customers.

Using more electricity could result in higher-than-normal utility bills. Walker recommends setting your thermostat to 68 degrees to help fight rising costs.
