A former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator re-signed a former Packers defensive coordinator as an assistant coach, who will now work directly under a former Packers assistant coach. Follow?
Miami Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley re-signed Joe Barry, the team’s linebackers coach and run game coordinator, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Barry, the Packers’ defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2023, will serve directly under Sean Duggan, the new Dolphins defensive coordinator who was a linebackers coach for Hafley in Green Bay over the last two seasons.
Hafley was hired by Matt LaFleur as the replacement for Barry, who wasn’t retained by the Packers following the 2023 season. Hafley’s two seasons in Green Bay led to a head coaching opportunity in Miami.
Following his exit, Barry was hired by former Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel as linebackers coach and run game coordinator in 2024. He will now stay in Miami under Hafley, who has brought several former Packers assistant coaches with him, including Duggan, Ryan Downard, Wendel Davis and Nathaniel Hackett.
Barry, who worked under Anthony Weaver in 2025, helped develop Jordyn Brooks into a first-team All-Pro selection. Brooks, a former first-round pick, led the league in tackles.

However, the Dolphins allowed 2,251 rushing yards (seventh-most in the NFL) and 4.8 yards per carry (fourth highest) under Barry’s coordination, and Miami finished 24th in overall scoring defense in 2025.
With Hafley and Barry now on the same staff, only one question remains: Would Mike Pettine be willing to come out of retirement and join the Dolphins?
