Michael Irvin hasn’t played football for Miami in nearly 40 years, but he was still one of the stars of the Hurricanes’ run to the national championship game.
Irvin was on the sidelines cheering on the Hurricanes during each of their College Football Playoff games.
The 59-year-old was constantly running around, celebrating with players and full of energy.
Irvin’s actions led some to question if he was high on cocaine while cheering on Miami. He responded to those rumors and strongly denied recent cocaine use.
“That’s the part that tripped me out too, right, that I’m right there in front of the camera for five hours. So after the game I do a little belt thing, and everybody sends me all the, ‘Man, Mike, right now he’s coked up. Right now. He’s all on coke,’” Michael Irvin said.
“I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, y’all. Wait, wait, wait, wait. First of all, y’all know [expletive] well coke don’t last five hours.’ And I hadn’t partaken in 20 years, but if you’ve got some five-hour stuff, let me know.
“Like stop it. Stop saying this stuff. You’ve been looking at me for the last five hours. There’s no way I could do something on this sideline.”
Irvin continued, stating that people don’t believe he was on cocaine but were instead joking around and trying to mess with him.
“They’re not doing it out of reality,” Irvin said. “They’re doing it to get to you.”
Michael Irvin played at Miami from 1984-87 before being selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 1988 NFL Draft.
He went on to win three Super Bowls with the Cowboys and made the Pro Bowl five times. Irvin insists he has not used cocaine in years, though he was arrested for it during his playing career.
