Isaac had a big time pin to help earn points towards a state championship

Isaac Velazquez is in his fourth-year wrestling for the Patriots. He has had quite the season, with some big-time wins.

“Isaac’s always been a really hard worker — 100% attendance to everything, shows up all the time,” Freedom High School boys wrestling coach David Bush said.

“This year we’ve had a lot of two-day tournaments, so they’ve been very long. But I have been getting a lot of good matches, especially at those like national tournaments,” Velazquez said.

Freedom High School was back in the state duals this year. Velazquez was facing off against a familiar opponent once again, one that he had lost to in previous matches.

“Avenging that loss, it just felt so good because last year he was my first match of regionals. I lost to him. Then he was my match to go to states, and I also lost to him again. So, getting the pin on him in the second period felt great,” Velazquez said. “I got up and started screaming. I felt so happy.”

“It gave us the momentum in that Wellington match in that regional final, which was really, really awesome to see for him,” Bush said.

As the team now gets set for state individuals, Isaac continues to be a leader both on and off the mats.

“He shows up every day, works hard every day. He’s an AP student, a future engineering student. So just being an all-around student athlete, he’s a great example of what it takes,” Bush said.
