Carving a pumpkin for Halloween can be fun.
But can you imagine doing it underwater?
Two groups of certified divers will participate in the inaugural Diver’s Paradise Underwater Pumpkin Carving and Costume Contests, scheduled for 5-10 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 18.
The event will kick off with a cookout at 5 p.m., followed by the costume contest at 6 p.m. The underwater pumpkin carving contest will begin with two boats departing at 7 p.m. in the Crandon Marina.
Michael Casey, managing director for Diver’s Paradise in Key Biscayne, said two boats will sail out and each team member will dive underwater with their tools to carve a pumpkin.
There’s no time limit but Casey said divers will be cautious to practice safe diving including air consumption.
“We spoke about what we can do and it has been done before in other locations and has been successful,” Casey said. “Everyone had a great time and loved doing it but with a strategic plan including being safe as possible
Casey said three people will judge the pumpkin carving contest and only one team can win.
The prize for the winner will be Diver’s Paradise supplying rental tanks and gear for the team to go out for an entire day of scuba diving.
“We’re trying to make it as fun as possible,” Casey said.
The winning costume will also win a prize, which Driver’s Paradise is wanting to keep as a surprise.
There’s a $10 fee each contest.
