ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The St. Petersburg Police Department (SPPD) said a pedestrian who was struck and critically injured on Tuesday died in the hospital.

Police said 44-year-old Robert Smith of St. Petersburg was walking between vehicles stopped at a traffic signal in the 4800 block of 22nd Ave. S. shortly after 9 a.m. on Feb. 3.

SPPD said Smith was not crossing at a marked crosswalk.

According to the report, a Jeep heading west on 22nd Ave. S. hit Smith and he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Jeep driver stopped immediately and remained at the scene, per the report.

Police said Smith died from his injuries at the hospital on Tuesday night.

SPPD said the investigation remains open.
