SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, (WINK) — A strong cold front moved into Southwest Florida, bringing some of the chilliest air the region has experienced in a while.
With temperatures expected to drop to near or below 30 degrees overnight and into early Sunday morning, the Salvation Army of Fort Myers opened its doors to help protect vulnerable residents from the cold.
Officials from the Salvation Army told WINK News they opened their doors on Monday in preparation for the cold weather.
They emphasized the importance of utilizing available resources, especially during such harsh conditions.
Officials said this is the largest response they have seen yet, as this marks the fourth time this year they have opened their doors to offer warmth.
“We’ve had up to 73 extra guests per night, which means that all of our spaces are full, but we’re glad because people have a safe place to get strong during the storm,” said Major Ethan Frizzell, Salvation Army Area Commander. “We are able to build relationships and hopefully get them on a pathway to housing.”
The Salvation Army plans to keep its doors open through Tuesday night and will not turn anyone away who needs a warm place to stay.
They are also asking the community to donate hygiene items and warm clothing for those in need.
