TAMPA — International Plaza in Tampa will get a 50,000-square-foot open air expansion under a plan announced Wednesday by its owner, Simon.

In a news release, Simon said the project will create “a walkable outdoor shopping experience showcasing global brands, alongside a reimagined Bay Street including an enhanced al fresco dining and gathering area.”

It added that, “The existing center will be fully revitalized with new design finishes that enrich every guest touchpoint, complemented by upgraded amenities and curated hospitality experiences.”

The mall is one of three in the country that Simon will redevelop as part of a $250 million project. The others are in Nashville and Denver.

Simon acquired the three properties in November from Taubman Realty Group.

Construction is expected to begin this year.

International Mall has more than 160 stories, with more to be added as part of the project.
