Tallahassee woman found guilty in fentanyl poisoning death of 3-year-old son

  • February 4, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A jury deliberated for nearly two hours Wednesday before finding 36-year-old Cameren Evans guilty as charged.

Evans was on trial for aggravated manslaughter in the January 2023 death of her three-year-old son, Enrique Evans.

Court documents say the toddler died of “fentanyl toxicity.”

Both Evans and her former boyfriend, Tony Balcom, are facing charges in the child’s death, but are being tried separately.

Court documents say Balcom was the child’s primary caregiver and officers found several different kinds of drugs at his home the night the toddler died.

Evans’ sister, Sheqwena Evans, testified Wednesday that she had previously spotted scales on Balcom’s kitchen counter.

Sheqwena Evans testified that her sister Cameren called her just a couple of weeks after Enrique was born.

“She was having, you know, a hard time. She wanted to, you know, try to get herself together. She wanted to go to rehab, and she asked me if I would come and pick him up, if I would keep him, and I didn’t mind,” she testified.

Evans’ sister said she took care of the baby for just a few months before Evans brought him back to Tallahassee.

Evans’ sister testified that she and several other family members had repeatedly offered to care for the toddler.

“Did you agree that you would take custody and care for him?”

“I did. I’ve always been vocal about … I’ll get him. I don’t mind, and I understand you’re going through things,” she said.

“And how did the defendant respond?”

“It was like it went in one ear and out the other,” her sister testified.

Testimony in Evans trial spanned two days, and the jury deliberated for nearly two hours before reaching a verdict.

A case management hearing is now scheduled for next week.

Balcom is set to stand trial on Feb. 16.
