Your typical spa might be trendy or iconic. But is it a historical landmark that has been quietly holding it down for a full century?
The Safety Harbor Resort & Spa celebrates its centennial this year, marking 100 years as one of Pinellas County’s most enduring and recognizable destinations. Founded in 1926, this waterfront landmark has a reputation for its Old Florida charm and healing mineral springs.
Florida’s only resort with natural mineral spring pools
The resort is situated along Tampa Bay in the heart of Safety Harbor and is home to the legendary Espiritu Santo natural mineral springs. These unique springs are a magnet for those seeking some R&R. Notably, the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa is the only resort in Florida with natural mineral spring pools, making it a truly one-of-a-kind experience in the state.
The property’s historical significance is also impressive. In 1964, the U.S. Department of the Interior recognized and designated the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa as a National Historic Landmark. In 1997, it also earned designation as a Florida Heritage Landmark. This further cemented its place in both local and state history.

The owner’s story is part of the legacyÂ
Undoubtedly, the resort’s legacy speaks for itself. But this milestone year is made even more meaningful by the origin story of its owner.
William Touloumis, owner of the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa, recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Born in Greece, Touloumis immigrated to the United States in 1952 at just 16 years old. He left behind his mother and three younger brothers in pursuit of opportunity and the American dream. Through discipline and powerful entrepreneurial spirit, he went on to build a career as one of the most successful commercial developers in Pinellas County.
Touloumis served as a former chief architect for the Walgreens drugstore chain. He later founded Olympia Development Group Inc. He designed and developed more than 100 Walgreens locations, along with numerous office buildings and restaurants across Florida and Georgia. As owner of the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa, he has continued the legacy of a property that balances preservation with thoughtful modernization.

Hospitality with Greek flairÂ
Beyond the spa, on-site dining is worth a stop. The Fountain Grille serves fresh seafood and Greek specialties like fried feta and classic avgolemono soup, nodding to Touloumis’ heritage while adding a unique layer to the resort’s culinary identity. It’s comfort food with personal history.
Luxury at the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa is thoughtful rather than flashy. Mineral spring pools and serene treatment rooms create experiences designed to slow you down and help you feel more grounded in the present. Even the little details elevate the stay. Many guest bathrooms feature waterfront views, transforming your getting ready routine into a natural escape.Â
Close to the airport, but hard to leaveÂ
The resort is conveniently located near both Tampa International Airport (TPA) and St. Pete Clearwater International Airport (PIE). But once you settle into the spa, you may find yourself tempted to ironically extend your stay and delay that flight.Â
