Ruth Eckerd Hall
Gypsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes
CLEARWATER — Grammy winning band The Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes will perform on Saturday, Feb. 14, 8 p.m., at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen Booth Road, Clearwater.
Tickets start at $72.46. Visit www.rutheckerdhall.com or call 727-791-7400.
Reyes has been the leader and co-founder of The Gipsy Kings for over 30 years. In the past three decades, they have dominated the world music charts and sold more than 14 million albums worldwide. Their platinum compilation, “The Best of the Gipsy Kings,” was charting for over a year upon its release and their ninth studio album, “Savor Flamenco,” was awarded the Grammy for Best World Music Album in 2013.
This iconic legacy began when Nicolas’ father, Jose Reyes, formed a celebrated flamenco duo with Manitas de Plata. When the pair parted ways, the elder Reyes became even more popular upon starting his own band, backed by his son, called Los Reyes. In later years, Nicolas headed out on his own and began playing in the town of Arles in the south of France. He traveled throughout the country, busking on the streets of Saint-Tropez, playing wherever he could. Having adopted the perpetual motion of the gypsy lifestyle, his band eventually translated “Los Reyes” and became the Gipsy Kings.
The band’s music went on to fuse with popular culture. In addition to the accolades above, the traveling Gipsy Kings have played some of the world’s greatest stages, from the Hollywood Bowl to Royal Albert Hall as well as hitting the big screen. Their rendition of “Hotel California” was included in the film “The Big Lebowski” and the HBO series “Entourage.” The 2010 film “Toy Story 3” featured a Gipsy Kings version of the movie’s popular, Randy Newman-penned theme, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.”

Drawing on the wide-ranging influences of his five-decade career, the ensemble’s new album “Groove in the Face of Adversity,” out now via Mack Avenue Records, channels the soul of the Motor City through a blend of steamy jazz, juke-joint blues, and loose-limbed funk — a sound both timeless and deeply personal. In concert, Was and the band will feature music from “Groove in the Face of Adversity” alongside a live rendition of The Grateful Dead’s “Blues for Allah,” honoring the album’s 50th anniversary.
The Pan-Detroit Ensemble features top-tier jazz musicians from Don’s hometown, including longtime collaborator Dave McMurray on saxophone, and Eminem’s Oscar-winning collaborator, keyboardist Luis Resto. Additional members include trombonist Vincent Chandler, trumpeter John Douglas, drummer Jeff Canaday, percussionist Mahindi Masai, guitarist Wayne Gerard, and vocalist Steffanie Christi’an.
“There’s a unique sound and feel to Detroit that permeates the music in a way that resonates all over the globe,” said Was. “There’s a rawness, a lack of pretension, and an unmistakable underlying groove that reflects the people and culture of the entire city.”
Over the past five decades, Was has become one of music’s most respected figures — as a producer, bassist, composer, and longtime head of Blue Note Records. His production credits span The Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, and many others, with combined sales exceeding 100 million albums. His honors include a BAFTA Award, an Emmy, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association.

Tickets start at $74. Visit www.rutheckerdhall.com or call 727-791-7400.
With five Grammy Awards, 14 Blues Foundation Awards, and a groundbreaking career spanning nearly 50 years under his belt, Keb’ Mo’s got nothing left to prove. Born and raised in Compton, Keb’ began his remarkable journey at the age of 21, when he landed his first major gig playing with Jefferson Airplane violinist Papa John Creach. For the next 20 years, Keb’ would work primarily behind the scenes, establishing himself as a respected guitarist, songwriter, and arranger with a unique gift for linking the past and present in his evocative playing and singing.
In 1994 he would introduce the world to Keb’ Mo’ with the release of his widely acclaimed self-titled debut. Critics were quick to take note of Keb’s modern, genre-bending take on old school sounds, and two years later, he garnered his first Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album with “Just Like You.”
In the decades to come, Keb’ would take home four more Grammy Awards, top the Billboard Blues Chart seven times, and perform everywhere from Carnegie Hall to The White House. He has collaborated with many musical artists, such as Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, The Chicks, and Lyle Lovett. He also earned the Americana Music Association’s 2021 award for Lifetime Achievement in Performance.

The Robert Cray Band
CLEARWATER — The Robert Cray Band will perform on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 8 p.m., at the Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, 405 Cleveland St., Clearwater.
Tickets start at $49. Visit www.rutheckerdhall.com or call 727-791-7400.
Cray is a blues icon, a soul man and a rock-and-roller. The Georgia-born, Washington-raised musician first picked up a guitar after seeing The Beatles on TV then, having witnessed Jimi Hendrix perform in Seattle, determined that his destiny would follow a similar path. And so it turned out: across the past half-century, Cray has developed into one of American music’s most singular artists.
From forming a teenage garage band, through to striding the stage alongside several of the world’s greatest guitarists, Cray’s story is one of struggle and commitment. Struggle and commitment that led to Cray enjoying phenomenal success — selling millions of albums and countless concert tickets, winning five Grammy Awards, being inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, recipient of the Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award, designing two signature model Fender guitars — yet for him what’s always mattered most is the music. Every note he plays counts, every song he sings is delivered as if it is his last: integrity and intensity are what has guided Cray’s musical career. He has never cheapened his output or delivered a substandard performance. Indeed, his commitment to making music of the highest standard has won Cray both a loyal audience and the respect of many of popular music’s most legendary figures.
Cray’s rise to the top was, like his music, a slow burn, he first built a following in small towns across the Pacific Northwest. Even before Cray had a record deal he enjoyed local hero status — so much so in 1978 he was cast (as a musician) in “Animal House,” the blockbuster comedy that made John Belushi famous. That was also the year Cray recorded his debut album, “Who’s Been Talkin’,” although Tomato Records’ internal problems held up the album’s release until 1980. And then, just as “Talkin’” was winning great reviews, Tomato collapsed into bankruptcy.
Cray and his band — today consisting of Richard Cousins (bass guitar), Dover Weinberg (keyboards) and Les Falconer (drums) — used the momentum the album gave them to play further afield.
Across five decades Robert Cray has created a richly inclusive American music, revitalizing both blues and soul while rocking hard with the very best. To achieve 50 years in the music industry and still be as fresh and committed as when starting out is an achievement few can boast of but Cray can: He has released 19 studio albums, every one replete with his extremely distinctive songs.

Tickets start at $40.69. Visit www.jannuslive.com.
In the four years since joining forces, fast-rising, genre-defying alt/hip-hop phenoms Joey Valence & Brae have cemented themselves as a must-see live act and bona fide recording artists with viral one-off singles and full-length projects like their recently released third studio album “Hyperyouth” on RCA Records. With the volume turned up to max capacity and while remaining undeniably themselves throughout, JVB is as eclectic and hard-hitting as ever on the new album.
“Hyperyouth” was written, produced, mixed and mastered by the pair in Joey’s State College, Pennsylvania, bedroom and is jam-packed with all the hallmarks of the best of JVB. It’s a sample-heavy, maximalist rager threaded by boisterous raps, booty popping bars, catchy call and response hooks and EDM-infused beats. The record digs deeper thematically, weaving a message of growing up without getting old throughout — a marked, lyrical evolution and the duo’s most innovative work to date that still marries elements from their early hits and critically-acclaimed debut “Punk Tactics” and sophomore LP “No Hands.”
In between those drops, they’ve collaborated with an eclectic mix of friends and fans including IDK, Pendulum, 6ix, ACRAZE and Apashe, and conquered the sync market since their debut.

Known for their chaotic live shows, wild antics, and relentless touring, including a Guinness World Record for performing 385 shows in a single year — Goldfinger quickly became punk legends.
Today, Goldfinger continues to carry the torch for ska-punk with a refreshed and powerhouse lineup featuring John Feldmann (producer/lead vocalist), Charlie Paulson (guitar), Mike Herrera (bass), Nick Gross (drums), and Moon Valjean (guitar). Together, they deliver the same explosive energy and anthemic hooks that defined their early years, now evolved with the precision and passion of veteran musicians.
With their latest single release under Big Noise Music Group distributed through Virgin Music, Goldfinger proves that their rebellious spirit and infectious sound remain as sharp, urgent, and unshakably fun as ever.

James pairs vocal skill with intimate, meaningful interpretations. She brings flawless intonation, a broad range of colors and an instrumentalist’s sensibility to the bandstand. For James, it’s all about connection. Her unique ability to connect a decades-old lyric and reimagine it in today’s modern context gives her arrangements a rare depth. Audiences immediately feel connected to her during performances through her deep emotional interpretations and down to earth stage presence. Her polished musicianship, sense of phrasing and time make her a consummate musician’s singer — she knows how to work with a band, instead of asking it to merely back her.

She was featured on McPartland’s radio show “Piano Jazz Rising Stars” on NPR hosted by Jon Weber. Her performance credits read like a list of the most legendary venues and events in all of jazz and R&B, among them the Newport, Monterey and Montreal Jazz Festivals, the Apollo, the Village Vanguard and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Throughout Joy’s rise, her press has been glowing, to say the least. Of “Linger Awhile,” her breakout Verve Records debut, DownBeat commented, “With this beautiful recording, a silky-voiced star is born.” The New York Times called her a “silky-voiced rising star,” while NPR named her a “classic jazz singer from a new generation.” One sold-out concert at a time, she’s earned a reputation as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound, technique and charisma that defined her jazz heroines — including Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McRae. The songs from that first album were charming and playful, but didn’t reveal the entirety of Emerson’s story.
On his most recent album, 2023’s “The Golden Crystal Kingdom,” Emerson transcends the role of a honky-tonk country singer and becomes a chronicler of his history. The album is a bold continuation of the story he tells on “Vincent Neil Emerson,” with songs like the title track exploring the feelings he was left with after his days spent playing in Texas honky-tonks and dancehalls, and the track “The Time of The Rambler,” inspired by the early days of living in his car and busking on the streets.

To make a mosaic, tiny pieces interlock as a larger picture. In similar fashion, distinct elements coalesce as one in Capstan. The Florida quintet – Anthony Demario on vocals, Joe Mabry on guitar, Harrison Borman on guitar, Andrew “Boz” Bozymowski on bass and vocals, and Scott Fisher on drums — merge metallic precision with pit-splitting hardcore grooves and the kind of hooks you can’t shake. Since 2015, Capstan have progressed with each subsequent move. Following “Seasonal Depression,” released in 2015, and 2018’s “In The Wake of Our Discord,” they made waves with their full-length debut, “Restless Heart, Keep Running,” in 2019. Among many standouts, “Stars Before The Sun” racked up over 5.1 million Spotify streams followed by “We’ll Always Have Paris” with 2.5 million Spotify streams. In 2021, Capstan leveled up with the release of “Separate,” followed by “The Mosaic” in 2024.
