A transition period has been granted as Florida’s English-only driver’s license exam rule began on Friday, Miami-Dade’s tax collector said.

Beginning Friday, all state driver license knowledge and skills examinations will be administered exclusively in English, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said.

Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez said the new rule will apply for any appointment made on or after Friday but said there will be a transition period for those who made appointments before Friday.

The transition period will run through March 31 and applies to those who wish to take the test in Spanish, Fernandez said.

The state had previously offered exams for most non-commercial driver’s licenses in multiple languages, with commercial learner’s permit and commercial driver license exams only available in English and Spanish.
