The Caloosahatchee Bridge in Fort Myers is set to undergo a transformation that could make it more than just a travel route across the river. A local resident is spearheading efforts to add decorative lighting, turning the bridge into a potential landmark.

Dennis Adams, a Fort Myers resident, proposed the idea of illuminating the bridge to enhance its appearance and serve as an inviting entrance to the city.

“Why don’t we light this bridge like they do in other cities to make it look pretty and a good entrance to the city,” said Adams.

Adams has collaborated with the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and an engineering firm to push the project forward. Currently, two lighting design options are being explored. The city’s renderings propose lights installed underneath the bridge, while Adams’ concept suggests placing them along the sides. Both designs are under consideration.

City officials believe the lighting project could enhance the riverfront, support downtown businesses, and reflect ongoing investment in the area.

“That makes sense to me, we need more lighting in general down here. But that’s a great idea,” said Lou Thomas, a local snowbird.

Though the project remains in the design phase, Adams is optimistic about its progress.

“I was really pleased that the city of the CRA was anxious to speak with me, but also to keep me involved in it,” said Adams.

The next steps for the project include environmental and beautification reviews. Once these are completed, the proposal will return to the city council for final approval before moving into planning and engineering.
