An Orlando couple suffered a tragic accident while on vacation in Wyoming. Thirty-one-year-old Josh Escamilla and his wife, Katelyn, were involved in a snowmobile accident that left Josh dead and required Katelyn to be airlifted to a hospital. Katelyn’s cousin, Jaclyn DiMatteo, said she is still in the hospital more than a week after the January accident. She said the couple met at the University of Central Florida and married in 2019. She said they called Orlando home with their dog Ollie, and they both got jobs at Lockheed Martin. “They’re travelers, they love traveling the world together. They love traveling the globe,” DiMatteo said. It was on one of their many trips, this time to Wyoming, in the Grand Teton area, that DiMatteo said something tragic happened. “These kind of things are shocking,” she said. “I couldn’t wrap my brain around it, you know?”According to information from Teton County Search and Rescue, two people were riding tandem on a snowmobile on Jan. 26 as part of a guided tour. The snowmobile went off the trail and struck a tree. Josh didn’t survive. Katelyn was badly hurt. “She was airlifted to, like, the closest hospital out there,” DiMatteo said. She said as of Friday night, Katelyn is still in that hospital with family by her side, and that she’s been sedated since the accident happened. “She’s pretty stable right now,” DiMatteo said. “This next step would be to hopefully get her to wake up eventually, and they want to transport her closer to home, I guess, or to a different facility that specializes in the brain injury she has.”Along with Katelyn’s physical recovery will come the emotional toll of the loss of her husband. “The uphill battle right now is getting her stable, but then you know, once she does wake up, it’s going to be another tough moment, you know,” DiMatteo said. She said her family is asking for prayers right now as Katelyn remains hospitalized. They have started a GoFundMe page both for her recovery and funeral expenses for Josh.
