Drought conditions remain severe to extreme across North Florida, South Georgia

  • February 7, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Drought conditions remain severe to extreme in North Florida and South Georgia.

Many lakes in the area are seeing extremely low water levels.

The National Weather Service said this is the worst drought since 2011.

NWS Senior Service Hydrologist and Meteorologist Kelly Godsey said there could be several impacts if we don’t get more rain in the next few months.

“So, our concern is that if we see below normal precipitation, which is our forecast for February and March, that when we get into our drier months of April and May, and we start to warm up, that the fire risk will rapidly increase,” Godsey said. “Indeed, we’re actually already seeing that across a number of counties in South Georgia and North Florida.”

Godsey said just a stray ember landing somewhere can start a brush fire, which can spread very quickly.

The WCTV First Alert Weather Team will continue to monitor drought conditions.
