Longtime Thomas University scoreboard operator throws out first pitch

  • February 7, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Coaches may have changed, and players have come and gone, but for nearly two decades Jon Stephens has been a familiar face to the Thomas University baseball team.

Stephens has operated the scoreboard for the Night Hawks off and on for 18 seasons, starting in 1998.

Head coach Tom Fleenor recognized that commitment Friday afternoon, as Stephens got to throw out the first pitch for TU’s home opener.

“When you think about first pitches, you want it to be something that is honoring someone,” said Fleenor. “I didn’t want it to be something random. The first one of the year was kind of an easy decision to go with Jon.”

“Coach likes me to keep the scoreboard,” added Stephens. “I’ve done this my whole life! This is my favorite team. Night Hawks.”

The Night Hawks won their home opener, 11-4 over 14th ranked Reinhardt University.
