The new owner of International Plaza in Tampa is giving the mall a multimillion-dollar face-lift.
Simon Property Group announced on Feb. 4 that it would invest $250 million into elevating three of its shopping centers across the U.S., including International Plaza, located at 2223 N. Westshore Blvd.
A 50,000-square-foot exterior expansion will create a new “walkable outdoor shopping experience.” “Baystreet” — a section of the mall which features a variety of sit-down restaurants — will get a new outdoor dining and gathering space.
The rest of the mall will get a fresh new design with upgraded amenities and “curated hospitality experiences,” according to a media release.
“This investment reflects Simon’s focus on strategic redevelopments to create vibrant, modern environments that cater to today’s shopper,” said Eli Simon, Chief Operating Officer.
The Indianapolis-based company acquired an 80% stake in International Plaza from Taubman Centers in 2020. In November, it bought out Taubman, becoming the mall’s sole owner.
Construction is expected to begin sometime this year. Simon will announce new tenants in the coming months.
