Residents of Key Biscayne enjoy walking our island at all hours of the day and evening, whether it’s an after-dinner stroll, walking the dog or heading home from a neighborhood gathering. While Key Biscayne is a very safe community, it is always important to take a few simple precautions, especially after dark.
Some areas of the island are less illuminated at night and drivers may have difficulty seeing pedestrians, particularly those crossing the street or wearing dark clothing. Wearing light-colored or reflective clothing, carrying a small light or using reflective accessories can greatly improve visibility.
When possible, cross at marked crosswalks and make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the roadway.
Staying alert is also important. Avoid distractions such as excessive phone use while walking and remain aware of your surroundings. Walking with a friend or family member can add an extra layer of comfort, especially later in the evening.
If you’re listening to music, keep the volume low enough to hear approaching vehicles or activity around you.
Our Police Department remains highly visible and responsive, with officers regularly patrolling neighborhoods throughout the island. If something feels out of place, trust your instincts and report it. Residents are encouraged to call the non-emergency line for concerns or 911 in the event of an emergency.
Safety in Key Biscayne is a shared responsibility. By taking simple steps and looking out for one another, we can continue to enjoy the freedom of walking our island, day or night, while keeping our community safe for everyone.
