MACON, GA – The Jacksonville men’s soccer team secured a crucial road result on Tuesday, battling back to earn a 1-1 draw against Mercer at Betts Stadium thanks to a dramatic late goal from Joshua Izu.
The Dolphins (4-6-4, 1-1-2) showed resilience after falling behind late in the first half. Mercer broke the deadlock at the 40:47 mark when Will Taylor found the net, assisted by Liam Corr, sending the Bears into the break with a 1-0 lead.
Jacksonville came out aggressively in the second half, dominating possession and generating numerous chances. The team ramped up the pressure, tallying 12 of their 13 total shots and six corner kicks in the final 45 minutes as they desperately searched for an equalizer.
That relentless pressure finally paid off in the 89th minute. Forward Matias Tobon, who came on as a substitute and immediately provided an offensive spark, played a perfectly weighted ball into the box. Izu finished the sequence, firing home the leveler at 88:19 to knot the score at 1-1.
Goalkeeper Christian Sekanina anchored the defense, turning away one shot to preserve the tie. The Dolphins held a significant advantage in shots, outshooting the Bears 13-8 for the match, with both teams registering two shots on goal.
