The Sanibel Public Library provides a variety of programming for adults and children.
With support from the Sanibel Public Library Foundation, it has launched a series of virtual author talks to include bestselling authors and thought leaders. The next one will take place on Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. with Dr. Lindsey Stewart, award-winning author of “The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic.” She will talk about her new book.
Stewart is a Black feminist philosopher and an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Memphis. She is the author of “The Politics of Black Joy.” Her work has been featured in Blavity, Signs, Hypatia and the British Journal for the History of Philosophy. Stewart holds a 2021 Michael Beaney Prize.

Additionally, the library has the following programs scheduled:
The History of Football will be held on Feb. 11 from 11 a.m. to noon with Facility Manager Derek Baker. The program will explore the history, excitement and life lessons of football. From the first college game in 1869 to today’s Super Bowl tradition, attendees will discover how the sport grew into America’s favorite pastime. They will look at teamwork, resilience, the thrill of victory and agony of defeat, with famous plays, stories and even a few fun activities.
On Feb. 11, America’s 250th Birthday in Our National Parks will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. with Penny Musco.
Crafternoon: Valentine’s Day Edition will be held on Feb. 11 from 3 to 4 p.m. Open to ages 3 and up, attendees will decorate a picture frame for Valentine’s Day. A variety of craft supplies will be available, along with examples and guidance.
On Feb. 13, America at War: The Aleutians 1942-43 will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. with library staffer Duane E. Shaffer. It is often overlooked that in 1942 the Japanese managed to successfully invade and conquer a part of American territory. It was the first time since 1815 that this had happened. Capturing the Aleutian Islands, located in the Alaskan territory, was seen by the Japanese as vital in order to protect their northern defensive perimeter. Fighting in the Aleutians was uniquely brutal. It was a barren and rugged landscape of icy mountains and thick bogs, with a climate of constant snow, freezing rains, and windstorms.
Sanibel Brushstrokes will be held on Feb. 13 from noon to 3 p.m.
On Feb. 14, Saturday Crafterday will take place from 11 a.m. to noon with artist and coloring book creator Melissa Gindling. Participants will create a Valentine’s Day themed artwork.
R.E.A.D. to Rizzo will be held on Feb. 18 from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. Youths will practice reading and reading out loud with Rizzo, a trained Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.) therapy dog. Registration is required by contacting esherman@sanlib.org.
On Feb. 18, Crafternoon take place from 3 to 4 p.m. Open to ages 3 and up, participants will make a work of art. A variety of craft supplies will be available, along with examples and guidance.
