Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan is condemning a subpoena from Attorney General James Uthmeier’s Office alleging potentially illegal actions from the city’s Hispanic Outreach Coordinator.

In a lengthy statement, the first-term Democrat challenged the legitimacy of a probe into Yanira Cardona’s Instagram video warning locals where immigration enforcement operations were happening this month.

Additionally, Deegan said Uthmeier, the former Chief of Staff for Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed to the position last year, was playing politics at the expense of real concerns for people in this state.

“Instead of addressing the pocketbook concerns of Floridians — including property insurance, housing costs, and healthcare — the Attorney General is once again on a hyper-partisan fishing expedition as we enter election season,” Deegan’s Office commented.

The subpoena seeks all records produced by, or sent to, Cardona between Jan. 2 and Jan. 16, including those on city-provided devices and personal devices used to conduct city business. Cardona, the city’s Director of Hispanic Outreach, has conflated the two at times, featuring her business card on her personal Instagram.

The city’s Custodian of Records is set to appear at the AG’s Jacksonville office on Feb. 20 to testify on this matter, which the city’s General Counsel Michael Fackler said wasn’t a violation of law.

Deegan’s Office said the city “has received and will fully cooperate with a subpoena received from the Office of Statewide Prosecution.”

“We are confident that a review of the facts will show the administration acted lawfully, as we always do,” the Monday afternoon statement continued.

The Mayor’s Office goes on to say that it’s not involved in immigration enforcement at all, as “the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has a duly elected Sheriff and maintains the sole responsibility for coordination and interaction with state and federal immigration agencies. The mayor does not hold any authority over those activities under our consolidated government.”

That statement is arguably not responsive to Uthmeier’s allegation. The AG said the Office of Statewide Prosecution was probing a “coordinated effort amongst officials … to thwart investigative efforts.”

“If there’s evidence that her administration coordinated to impede immigration enforcement and harbor criminal aliens, we will hold them accountable,” Uthmeier posted on X ahead of a press conference in Green Cove Springs.
