Florida speed skaters Brittany Bowe and Erin Jackson came close but failed to medal Monday in the women’s 1,000 meter race.

Bowe, the owner of the world record in the 1,000, set back in 2019, came in fourth, while Jackson — who took the Olympic gold in the 500 four years ago — was sixth.

Team USA speed skater Erin Jackson placed sixth in the women’s 1000m race Monday.

The winner was Dutch speed skater Jutta Leerdam, who claimed her first gold medal in an Olympic-record time.

Bowe, an Ocala, Florida, native and FAU alum, is making her fourth and final Olympic appearance with Team USA at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games. The 37-year-old plans to hang up the skates at the end of the season.

Before she was an Olympic speed skater, Brittany Bowe was a little girl learning to inline skate in Ocala, Florida. Now Bowe’s childhood coach is watching her compete in her fourth Olympic Games in Milan Cortina, but not before giving her the surprise of a lifetime.

Bowe is competing in two other events at the Milano Speed Skating Stadium: the women’s 1500m and women’s team pursuit.

Bowe won bronze in the women’s team pursuit at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics
and bronze in the women’s 1000m at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Jackson, also a native of Ocala and a University of Florida alum, captured the women’s 500m title at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

The 33-year-old Jackson is scheduled to compete in the women’s 500m in Milan, with the medal event scheduled for Feb. 15.
