American Legion Post 123 and Scouting America, BSA, Troop 1740 held a flag retirement ceremony on Jan. 17 on Sanibel. A number of American flags collected from the public were retired. Legion Youth and Children Outreach Officer and 2nd Vice Cmdr. Bill Cook offered the opening remarks for the ceremony. Also present were Finance Officer Craig Helmen, 1st Vice Cmdr. John Hird, Veteran Services Officer Karen Shutway and Sergeant at Arms David Zumbrum, along with Legion Auxiliary Unit 123 President Heather Silbar. Scouts Nathan Ames, Christopher Erickson, Yari Mendez and Evan Nuckolls and Scout Leaders Neil Erikson, Holly Nuckolls and Yari Mendez took part. The Legion and Scouts extended a thank you to Sanibel Fire and Rescue District Lt. Shane Grant, firefighter-EMT Dayan Concepcion and firefighter-paramedic Brandon Pujol, who were on hand to ensure safety and provided a fire safety briefing. The Post is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Open to the public, food and drinks are available for purchase. Flags in need of retirement can be dropped off.
