TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Charlie Ward era in Tallahassee tipped off in dominant fashion Tuesday night, as Florida A&M overwhelmed Edward Waters 100–54 in an exhibition at the Al Lawson Center. The Rattlers looked every bit ready for the new season, shooting a blistering 60 percent from the field and 53 percent from three-point range, while showcasing the fast-paced, team-first identity that Coach Ward preached since assuming the role last spring.
“We wanted to come out and set the tone for how we’re going to play — with energy, effort, and togetherness,” Ward said. “I’m proud of how our guys shared the ball and stayed locked in from start to finish.”
Ten different Rattlers found the scoring column, with Anquan Boldin leading the way with 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Jaquan Sanders knocked down four triples on his way to 12 points, while Micah Octave and Lenard Taylor each added 11. Jordan Chatman also finished with 12 points and three assists, helping Florida A&M pile up 22 assists as a team. Florida A&M’s depth and defensive intensity were on full display. The Rattlers turned 20 Edward Waters turnovers into 28 points, sprinted for 23 fast-break points, and got 50 points from the bench.
After a 39–24 lead at halftime, the Rattlers exploded for 61 second-half points, pushing the margin as high as 46 late in the game. Edward Waters was led by Gabe Guilford with 12 points and Keshawn Evans with 11, but the Tigers couldn’t keep pace with FAMU’s tempo and shooting.
The win marked a promising start for Ward, the former Heisman Trophy winner and longtime Florida State star who now commands the Rattlers’ sideline. Florida A&M travels crosstown on Sunday and will play at Florida State in a 4 p.m. exhibition.
