LCEC recently reported that construction of its new Sanibel Service Center on Sanibel-Captiva Road began with the excavation of a retention area as required by the South Florida Water Management District. The retention area for storm water management was part of the first phase of the project that will help to enhance electric service reliability on the island, especially after severe storms.

THE ENVIRONMENT

Before clearing or construction began, comprehensive environmental assessments were conducted to ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations. LCEC invested a great deal of time and funds and partnered with city of Sanibel officials and environmental agencies to ensure the completed project is beneficial to residents, businesses and visitors in terms of conservation, aesthetics, safety and reliability of essential electric service. As of Jan. 9, activities complied with environmental permits for the construction of state-designated critical infrastructure. The plans include robust mitigation and replanting plans once construction is completed.

WHY A NEW CENTER?

The resilient LCEC Service Center will serve as a dedicated hub for restoration crews and equipment, reducing dependency on mainland staging, and ensuring faster restoration for residents and businesses after emergency situations and throughout the year. Recent hurricanes have exposed challenges such as limited staging areas, flooding, sand intrusion and damage of materials. The new center addresses the challenges and helps LCEC provide safe and reliable electric service to Sanibel and Captiva.

KEEPING STAKEHOLDERS INFORMED

LCEC acknowledged the temporary visual impact of the large-scale construction project with the removal of site vegetation and the need for enhanced communication about the construction schedule. Once completed, the project will once again blend into Sanibel’s native landscape. LCEC reported that it will continue to keep stakeholders and the public informed through regular updates and collaborative oversight with environmental agencies.
