Recent freezing temperatures have led to an increase in weather-related calls for first responders across the area, according to emergency officials.
One of those calls involved Jacksonville resident Cassandra Phillips, who found herself in distress after her dog fell through ice covering a backyard pool during the recent cold weather.
Phillips said she was watching her dog outside when the animal broke through the ice. As she attempted to help, Phillips entered the pool area and struggled in the freezing water.
Jacksonville firefighters were dispatched to the scene to assist. Phillips said she was able to break through the ice but later experienced chest discomfort, prompting additional concern.
Despite delays caused by icy road conditions, firefighters arrived and evaluated Phillips to ensure she was not seriously injured.
“When I saw their faces, I knew I was going to be okay,” Phillips said. “The humility they showed was amazing.”
A representative with the Jacksonville Fire Department said assisting residents during hazardous conditions is part of the department’s mission.
“We love doing our job — providing that service and getting out to help the community,” Captain Charles-Craft said.
Phillips later visited the fire station to thank the firefighters who responded, bringing gifts as a show of appreciation. She also encouraged others to recognize first responders who continue to serve during challenging and potentially hazardous conditions.
Emergency officials continue to remind residents to use caution when icy conditions are present and to avoid walking or driving on frozen surfaces when possible.
