CORAL GABLES, FLA. — No. 11 North Carolina missed 10 of its last 12 shots and lost at Miami, 75-66, on Tuesday night at the Watsco Center.
 
Miami drained eight free throws to seal the victory as it outscored UNC, 11-6, in the final 2:07. Malik Reneau’s 16 points led four double-figure scorers for the Hurricanes, who never trailed. Reneau added 10 rebounds and four assists.
 
Ernest Udeh Jr. had a double-double with 15 points on 7 of 8 shooting with 10 rebounds, and Tre Donaldson added 14 points and six boards for UM. 
 
Carolina couldn’t maintain momentum after Saturday’s big home win over No. 4 Duke, dropping to 19-5 overall and 7-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with the defeat. Miami snapped the Tar Heels’ five-game winning streak and improved to 19-5, 8-3.
 
Jarin Stevenson led UNC with 13 points and six rebounds. Caleb Wilson had 12 points on 4 of 10 shooting with six boards, and Henri Veesaar had 11 points and six rebounds on 5 of 12 shooting.
 
The Tar Heels shot just 9 for 34 (26.5 percent) in the second half, allowing Miami to win despite shooting 35.5 percent after halftime. The Hurricanes outrebounded Carolina, 41-35, the second consecutive Tar Heel opponent to win the battle of the boards.
 
Miami led throughout the opening half, but the Tar Heels hit 7 of 13 three-pointers (53.8 percent) in the first 20 minutes and trailed, 43-40, at the break. The Hurricanes dominated inside, outscoring Carolina, 46-28, in the paint.
 
 
How It Happened
First Half
• Carolina committed five turnovers in the first five minutes and trailed, 22-12, early.
• Miami hit 11 of its first 14 shots (78.6) percent as it led, 24-15, at the second timeout.
• The Hurricanes led by as many as 10 before Carolina cut its deficit to one point. Miami responded with a four-point play to go back up, 35-30, in the final six minutes of the half.
• After committing just seven turnovers in Saturday’s win over No. 4 Duke, the Tar Heels committed eight miscues in the first half against Miami, leading to eight Hurricane points.
• Both teams blistered the nets in the opening 20 minutes. Miami shot 58.1 percent and UNC shot at a 55.2 percent clip. Carolina hit 7 of 13 three-pointers to stay within striking range.
• The Tar Heels dominated bench points in the first half, 19-9, but Wilson scored just three first-half points.
 
Second Half
• Both teams cooled off offensively to start the second half with each squad missing 11 of its first 15 second-half shots.
• With 2:07 remaining, Udeh missed the second of two free throws, then grabbed his own rebound and connected on a layup with 2:07 left for a 66-60 Miami lead
• Reneau followed shortly thereafter with a free throw to give the Canes a 67-60 advantage as Miami controlled the final minutes.
