On Feb. 6 and Feb. 7, two Leon County girls basketball teams brought home district titles. Florida High won the 3A District 2 tournament while Rickards won the 4A District 2 tournament.
Rickards – 4A District 2
Since the 4A district 2 tournament only included three teams and Rickards was seeded first, the Raiders had a bye during the semifinal and faced off against seconded seeded Godby for the district title on Feb. 6. The district final was the third match between these two teams this season with Rickards winning all three by double digits.
This time around, Rickards got off to a quick start offensively scoring 14 points in the first quarter. More impressively, the Raiders held the Cougars to only two points in the second quarter, ending the half with a score of 28-14. Although Godby made a push in the third quarter, Rickards sealed the deal with 12 points in the fourth and a final score of 49-38. Notbale performances from the Raiders included Amaiyah Johnson (Jr.) with 15 points and Kindell Harrell (Jr.) and Amirahs Hayes (Sr.) both with 13 points.
Rickards’ next game will be against Menendez in the first round of the FHSAA 4A state tournament on Feb. 13.
Florida High – 3A District 2
After cruising by Suwannee in the semifinal round with a result of 57-9, Florida High faced off against Marianna posting a score of 54-37, capturing the 3A district 2 title. This was the first matchup of the season between these two teams.
Florida High will go on to play South Walton in the first round of the FHSAA 3A state tournament on Feb. 13.
