The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) just installed more than 100 new road signs at historic sites across the state for America 250.

One of them is at Centennial Park in historic Ybor City.

Historian Rodney Kite-Powell from the Tampa Bay History Center feels Ybor is the perfect spot for one of the new state markers.

“I think Ybor City really exemplifies a lot of what the United States represents,” Kite-Powell said. “You can come down here, get a cup of café con leche, have a Cuban sandwich, and just see the architecture and learn the history.”

That’s the idea of new markers like the one in Ybor: to highlight an area of Florida’s historical story.

The sign is one of more than a hundred that FDOT installed across the state, with at least one located in each county.

“We really wanted to make sure we’re celebrating our country, everything about Florida and the USA,” said Kris Carson with FDOT. “We decided to put these signs up. We worked with our local partners to decide what was important in every county so see what we could feature.”

For example, the sign in Ybor City has text explaining Ybor’s historical significance in Florida and how its cigar manufacturing was a big part of the “new south” in the 1880s after the Civil War.

“It really did exemplify the “New South”; in that it was an industrial city. A city with a diverse population,” Kite-Powell said.

It’s now one of more than a hundred places drivers can visit on a road trip around Florida for America’s big birthday.

FDOT made a booklet showing where all the signs are. They are available at welcome centers and rest areas around the state.
