According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the shooting happened in the area of Campbell Park, prompting a heavy police presence.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla — Police officers in St. Pete are looking for a suspect who they claim shot a man in the head in the Campbell Park area.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the shooting happened around 5 p.m. Wednesday on 9th Avenue South and 16th Street, close to a convenience store.

Police told 10 Tampa Bay News that, according to witnesses, the suspect “may have gone into the Citrus Grove Apartment complex a couple of blocks away.”

As of 6:30 p.m., no one has been taken into custody and the investigation is ongoing, according to SPPD.

St. Petersburg Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene and took the man who was shot to Bayfront Hospital, SPPD says. He was taken into surgery.

The incident has prompted a heavy police presence in the area Wednesday evening.
