A search is underway for a 20-year-old man who escaped police custody near the Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital on Wednesday evening, according to the Melbourne Police Department. Melbourne police said officers had arrested Eric Jerry on an outstanding warrant and were driving him to the Brevard County Jail when he claimed he was suffering from a medical issue. Police took him to Orlando Health on Wickham Road.Jerry managed to get out of his handcuffs and attacked the officers as they were getting him out of the car, then fled into the woods on the south side of the hospital. Despite hours of searching with dogs, drones and a helicopter, they could not find him.Records show Jerry’s most recent arrest was this past weekend for driving without a license, but he has been in trouble before. Records show he spent five years in prison, including for armed burglary, grand theft auto, and other charges.He was released from prison back in November.West Melbourne Police Department, Palm Bay Police Department, and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the search, a spokesperson for the Melbourne PD said. MELBOURNE, Fla. —

A search is underway for a 20-year-old man who escaped police custody near the Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital on Wednesday evening, according to the Melbourne Police Department.

Melbourne police said officers had arrested Eric Jerry on an outstanding warrant and were driving him to the Brevard County Jail when he claimed he was suffering from a medical issue.

Police took him to Orlando Health on Wickham Road.

Jerry managed to get out of his handcuffs and attacked the officers as they were getting him out of the car, then fled into the woods on the south side of the hospital.

Despite hours of searching with dogs, drones and a helicopter, they could not find him.

West Melbourne Police Department, Palm Bay Police Department, and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the search, a spokesperson for the Melbourne PD said.
