WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — The Florida House of Representatives has voted to nix the northern mockingbird as the Sunshine State bird and designate the pink flamingo.
In addition, the Florida scrub-jay would become the official state songbird after the House voted 112-1 in favor of HB 11 on Wednesday, February 11. The bill now heads to the Senate for a vote.
The flamingo would formally replace the mockingbird, which has been the state bird since 1972.

The American flamingo, celebrated for its striking pink plumage and graceful stature, symbolizes the state’s vibrant wildlife and natural beauty. Meanwhile, the Florida scrub-jay, a species native to the state known for its distinctive blue coloring and melodious calls. This bird is unique to Florida and represents the state’s diverse ecosystems.
The Florida Senate also introduced a companion bill on January 13 but has not reached a vote yet.
If the House bill is passed and approved by Governor Ron DeSantis, it will take effect on July 1, 2026.
