Thursday, flights to Fort Lauderdale took to the skies, adding another destination to RFD’s lineup.

The airport shared flights for the spring and summer months are selling out quickly as they add yet another warm-weather option.

“Really excited to have that. Getting that market announced, adding another destination with a partner we’ve had for years here at Rockford and just hoping that can help us reestablish another route, but then working with them to grow their footprint and grow their destinations out of Rockford,” Zack Oakley, the Executive Director of the airport said.

This adds to the airport’s list of Florida destinations, which currently include places like Orlando and Tampa.

As the flights start slowly, the airport hopes this is just the beginning of this option.

“Happy to see that route start, and we know it’s out through August now but based on the flexibility of Allegiant’s schedule and if there is good support from local community, we could see that route turn into a year-round route eventually,” Oakley said.

And this option may sound especially nice this time of year as it heads to the sunshine state.

“Back in November, Allegiant announced Fort Lauderdale twice weekly out of Rockford,” Oakley said. “This is a new route for us. First time in I think since 2008 since we’ve had a route down to Southeast Florida.”

These flights are currently scheduled through August.
