JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – There is a makeover happening in the Brooklyn neighborhood in an effort to revamp Jacksonville.

For more than three years, News4JAX has been reporting on what is on the horizon for a part of the Riverside area, specifically the Brooklyn neighborhood.
The first phase of One Riverside is taking shape at the site of the former Florida Times-Union building.
The new building includes 271 luxury apartments overlooking the St. Johns River.

Terha Marie moved into the new complex about three months ago and is among the first group of tenants.

“We have traveled for two years, and we were looking for amenities,” Marie said. “This is one of the nicest places we have ever been to.”
She just moved to Jacksonville with her fiancé after living in Arizona and Colorado.

Marie is trading in the pine trees for palm trees and said the move makes her optimistic based on her experience so far.
“Everything is new,” she said. “Not just the buildings, but the people. It almost is like everyone here has a fresh, clean start. They just wanna go at life in a new way.”

In addition to the apartments, a Whole Foods Market, Norikawa Japanese Restaurant, Solidcore Fitness Studio and 600-car parking garage are claiming spots at the property.

Phase 2 is going to include 125 multifamily units and additional space for retail.
