COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – Measles cases in Florida have jumped to at least 66 this week, with most reported at a university in South Florida.

An outbreak at Ave Maria University near Naples has climbed to nearly 60 cases this week.

CBS News has tracked more than 1,000 confirmed cases across 21 states this year, roughly half of all cases reported in 2025.

South Carolina has the largest outbreak with more than 900 cases since September.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends children get their first dose of the MMR vaccine between 12 to 15 months old.

“I thinks it’s a good reminder that kids should get the measles shot,” U.S. Commissioner of Food and Drugs Dr. Marty Makary said in an interview with CBS. “We put out, this administration, what we consider ‘core, essential vaccines.’ Measles is one of them.”
