JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Construction is underway for a new charter school on Jacksonville’s Northside.
Harbour Pointe Charter Academy is expected to serve more than 800 students and will give families on the Northside more educational opportunities.
But the school is being built during a time when more parents are opting out of sending their children to traditional public schools in Duval County.
The new school will be located right off Main Street North, making it the first charter school in the area. The design calls for a two-story building spanning just over 53,000 square feet. It also includes a turf playfield, a parking lot, and space for a future gym.
The city gave the green light for construction by approving a $10.4 million permit. The Summit Construction Management Group, a company based in Orlando, is building the school.
This comes as Duval County Public Schools are facing both declining enrollment and budget challenges.
To help close the gap, the district is exploring cost-cutting measures — including school consolidations, staff reassignments, and eliminating vacant positions.
At the same time, more families are choosing charter and private schools, which is contributing to the drop in public school enrollment.
Construction for Harbour Pointe is expected to wrap up in August 2026.
The school will serve 818 students in grades K–8, and the area is projected to grow by 13.5% over the next 10 years.
