CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank in Southwest Florida thrives on the dedication of its volunteers, with more than 4,000 people giving their time each year to ensure no one goes hungry.
At a food distribution in Cape Coral, Eddie, a regular volunteer, brings warmth and positivity to those waiting in line.
“How you doing mama?” Eddie asked with a smile.
He consistently volunteers for the Harry Chapin Food Bank, making sure those in line feel loved and supported.
“I love it when they smile,” Eddie said.
In the bustling Harry Chapin Food Bank warehouse, volunteers work tirelessly, packing and sorting food for those in need.
Richard Leber, president and CEO of the food bank, expressed his admiration for the volunteers.
“One of my favorite things is to go interact with the volunteers. Because if you know, if you’re having a down day or a difficult day, go talk to the volunteers and you know, they’ll cheer you up,” Leber said.
Volunteers at the food bank contribute more than 80,000 hours annually, saving millions in direct labor costs. This ensures that donated dollars go directly to food and programs for people in need.
Eddie shared his personal connection to the cause.
“When I was homeless and didn’t have nothing, people just gave me, man gave me. I say one day I’m help somebody, and I’m doing it. You’re here doing it,” Eddie said.
Eddie understands firsthand what it’s like to be in need and recognizes himself in many faces at the food bank. He knows the impact of a kind word and a bag of food.
“I think God blessed me to be here to be able to help somebody else,” Eddie said.
The Harry Chapin Food Bank continues to make a difference in Southwest Florida, powered by the generosity and spirit of its volunteers.
